It is the most wonderful time of the year folks! Award season is in full swing and the granddaddy of them all, The Oscars is tonight. Just like last year I am going to be bringing you through all the biggest awards of the night with a rundown of the nominees, my prediction on who will take the Oscar home and my personal ballot if I was in The Academy. This year is particularly special for me because to be honest, it was my favorite year of cinema in a long long time. All of the Best Picture nominees were must see cinema, plus there were a few more films that could have also gotten Best Picture nods (The Farewell, Knives Out, Uncut Gems, Midsommar to name a few). On top of all of that we got the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga with Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, and of course the biggest cinematic event of all time with the 2.79 billion dollar worldwide phenomenon of Avengers Endgame.
So where do we start? I am going to be breaking these awards down on a per paragraph basis, the order of the awards are going to be: Best Visual Effects, Best Score, Best Animated Feature, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Director, and Best Picture. I will bold all my picks so you guys can all see how wrong I am come Monday morning! Alright without further ado… here, we, go.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS:

I am going to be completely honest with you, I am biased. Very, very, very, biased. Because of that I am going to tell you that my pick for the award is Avengers: Endgame. The other nominees are: The Irishmen, The Lion King, 1917, and Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker. I just can’t pick another movie over Avengers: Endgame. I can’t do it. They could win this award on Thanos character design alone. The final battle was insane, Hulk and Rocket were done amazing per usual, they did so much on green screen that looked so real that I just can’t give this award to any other film, and yes I know I am a Marvel fanboy but fuck you if you think this movie doesn’t deserve this. I could see the Academy going with a few of the other choices, especially The Lion King because of its creation of an entire world that looked live action………. but fuck that movie those animals looked stupid and fell into the uncanny valley.
BEST SCORE:
Best Score this year is actually super tough for me. I really really like all the nominees and I know a lot of people think this is going to be a landslide victory for Joker but I am not quite sure. That being said, I am going to be going with Hildur Guðnadóttir’s work on Joker as my pick. The other nominees are: 1917, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, Little Women, and Marriage Story. This was hard for me because 1917 was actually really close for me, and I love John Williams and Randy Newman’s work in general so I really enjoyed each of their respective work this year. But this has GOT to be Joker. Just has to be. The score was so important in the movie, it really set the tone and made audiences feel a constant sense of unease and anxiety even when not much was happening on screen. The music is so eery that as it built I found myself actually getting goosebumps in theaters. I think the Academy is going to agree with me on this one tomorrow and also give Hildur Guðnadóttir the nod for Best Score for Joker.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Okay, kind of a letdown of a year for animated films for me, which was super surprising. Going into the year I would’ve told you Toy Story 4 on its own would have made this an awesome year for animated films, but honestly, Toy Story 4 let me down. Don’t get me wrong it was a great movie on its own but in the grand scheme of the franchise it felt super unnecessary and more of an unneeded Woody epilogue rather than another chapter in the Toy Story saga. I mean goddamn Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending what the hell was Disney thinking?! (Hint: Money.). However I digress. My pick for the award is Klaus and the other nominees are Toy Story 4, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Missing Link, and I Lost My Body. I do think Toy Story 4 and Missing Link have a chance too.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Brad motherfucking Pitt. That’s the pick, Brad Pitt. This is probably the most stacked acting nomination group of maybe all time with Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci also being nominated. Talk about an A-List group sheeeesh. Pitt was just awesome in the role and I think the Academy is going to agree with me and give him the award. He won the SAG and the Golden Globe as he goes for the trifecta with the Oscar and I can’t wait to see Brad take home a much earned first Academy Award.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Yet another star studded group, with the likes of Margot Robbie, Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and Kathy Bates. I think this award is pretty straight forward from the Academy’s standpoint in the sense that it is going to go to Laura Dern for her role in Marriage Story. Dern was amazing and has been cleaning up throughout award season, the Academy Awards will probably continue this trend as a whole for the big four acting awards with the guilds, globes, and various critic choices all have been being swept so far this year. If this award were to go elsewhere I think there is a huge discrepancy with where the Academy would go with it and where I would personally go myself. I think Florence Pugh for Little Women is the dark horse to unseat Dern for the award, however, personally my vote would go to Scarlett Johansson for JoJo Rabbit. Scar Jo in JoJo Rabbit just really hit for me for some reason, something was so pure about it that I loved, she really stole the show every time she was on screen and I felt such a genuine connection to her character throughout the entirety of the film. So to recap, Dern will deservingly win, however, I would personally give the award to Scar Jo.
BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Probably the easiest award of the night, being Joaquin Phoenix has seemingly all but been crowned for the award already for his performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker. The other nominees are Adam Driver, Leonardo DiCaprio, Anthony Banderas, and Jonathan Pryce. There really isn’t much to say about this award, but if I have to choose a dark horse I have to go with Adam Driver with a minimal chance to steal the award from Phoenix. I would say throw the house on Phoenix but with the odds Vegas has on the award you wouldn’t make any money anyway, that is how much of a lock this is.
BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

I hate to sound like a broken record right now but I sincerely do believe all four of the acting awards are being looked at as very straight forward by the academy, and because of this I am predicting the award will be going to Renee Zellweger for her portrayal of Judy Garland in the biopic Judy as she completes her Hollywood comeback tour by sweeping all the major acting awards throughout award season. The other nominees are Charlize Theron, Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, and Saoirse Ronan. I think there are two possibilities for people to upset Zellweger tonight and those are Cynthia Erivo and Scarlett Johansson. Erivo’s portrayal of Harriet Tubman in the film Harriet was unbelievably powerful and on top of that with such a socially moving movie I could see her making a lot of ballots. Johansson, the only actor nominated for a supporting and leading role this year was amazing as the female lead in Marriage Story opposite Adam Driver with a deeply emotion grabbing performance as a newly single mother trying to keep a family together through a divorce and may also be a dark horse against Zellweger. However, I believe Zellweger completes the award sweep tonight.
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Oh boy this is an awesome one, and I think I have to go with Once Upon A Time In Hollywood as my pick for who will take the Oscar home tonight. Simply put, Hollywood loves Hollywood. Historically nothing wins over the Academy then a movie about Hollywood and Once Upon A Time is a literal love letter to Old Hollywood and I think that will play extremely well with voters. The other nominees are: Parasite, Marriage Story, 1917, and Knives Out. I think Parasite also has a really good chance to take home the award as the script concept was truly original, it played out in an extremely surprising manner, and there is a HUGE excitement over a foreign language film having this good of a shot in so many major awards and that may get voters excited to vote for it. A personal pick of mine here is actually Knives Out. I think Rian Johnson made a near perfect murder mystery that excites at every turn and never had a dull moment throughout the films entirety.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
The nominees for best adapted screenplay are: The Irishman, JoJo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, and The Two Popes. I think I would go with JoJo Rabbit for this award. The satire was intelligent, funny, and a real tearjerker. Scar Jo, Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Sam Rockwell and Taika Waititi were all amazing in their roles and although their acting was amazing lot of that success came from great dialogue and a moving story by Taika Waititi. I think the other option, and probably where this award will go, is Joker. Loosely adapted from the classic comic The Killing Joke, Joker was an awesome psychological thriller that made audiences sincerely anxious and took a great look on how society treats those who suffer from mental illness. I would honestly be happy with either of these movies winning so this really is a win win for me on this award if it goes to either of them.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
The nominees for best cinematography are: The Irishman, Joker, The Lighthouse, 1917, and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The clear winner here has to be 1917. It could win on the running through the battle shot alone. The panning and following shots throughout the movie honestly made the film and I know this is bold but I think that it was my favorite cinematography of all time. I was blown away and I would be astonished if this award went anywhere else, seems like a shoe in to me.
BEST DIRECTOR
I think best director is a two horse race right now between Sam Mendes and Bong Joon Ho, and my pick is Sam Mendes. Mendes has one the Directors Guild and the Golden Globe for best directing, and traditionally over the past decade the Directors Guild winner has won almost all of the best director Oscar’s. The other nominees for the award are Todd Phillips, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin Scorsese, and honestly although I think they are more outside shots I really do think any of these awesome filmmakers are deserving of the win for their work on their respective films, but with the cinematography and shot / set choices on 1917 I think Mendes will take the award home tonight.
BEST PICTURE
Okay, the big one. Boy oh boy do I love all these films. This is the best Best Picture class in a long long long long long time. I think there were honestly 13 movies deserving of a nomination but only nine were nominated (which by the way is bullshit, use all ten nomination spots you fucking cowards). Our official nominees are: Joker, 1917, The Irishman, Little Women, Parasite, JoJo Rabbit, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Marriage Story, and Ford vs Ferrari. Here are my top five:
Coming in at fifth for me is a tie between Joker and Parasite. Both these movies were so amazing in their own right. On one hand Joker strives from all around strong acting performances, a nearly perfect score, and a great overview on social politics and mental illness in the country as a whole. On the other hand Parasite is a script and director lead film, which also dives deep into classism and brings you on a journey that takes many unexpected twists and turns and feels extremely poetic at the end. Why these films were very similar to me was that I thought they both did the same level job with dealing with social issues and both brought audiences on awesome anxiety ridden rides.
At number four for me is Ford vs Ferrari. Based on a true story Ford v Ferrari was an all around good time. It was just so fun. Bale and Damon both kill it in their roles and the film does an amazing job pulling at audiences heartstrings. On top of that, the way the film displayed the racing aspect was refreshing and felt much more real than your average racing movie. I think out of all of the Best Picture nominations Ford vs Ferrari is the best movie to sit down and watch with your family or by yourself for a fun rewatch and I mean that in the best way possible.
My third place choice is Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Although it runs over three hours, the film doesn’t feel it, and a lot of that enjoyability through a long runtime can be credited to the dynamic duo starring in the film, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Leo and Brad’s chemistry was god tier and made just hanging out with these characters through their day to day lives super fun must watch cinema. Julia Butters is the unsung hero of the film playing young actress Trudy Fraser. Butters steals the scene every time she is on camera, especially when she is alongside DiCaprio and has some of the best moments in a film littered with huge stars. A little side note on the film, DiCaprio’s scene in his trailer when he is yelling at himself was not only my favorite movie scene of the year, but of the past five years, AT LEAST.
My second place film is JoJo Rabbit. I know the film hasn’t been getting much top three buzz and a lot of that may be because of how small scale the movie is compared to some of these great epics from Hollywood royalty, but the film is damn good. I believe JoJo Rabbit had undoubtedly the most moving story out of any of the films, a top 3 ensemble acting performance, and was extremely different than anything else in theaters this year. In any other year Roman Griffin Davis would get a leading actor nomination, but the field was too crowded this year and going against Hollywood royalty never helps. Overall I know the film probably won’t be the film inside the envelope tonight but I think it is as deserving as any of the others.
Finally, my Best Picture choice for this year is……. 1917! I loved this movie. Loved loved loved it. I didn’t want it to end. It had everything that I wanted from a best picture nominee: amazing cinematography, a moving story, characters I can get emotionally invested in, real stakes within the plot, great acting, an amazing set, made the audience feel a range of emotions throughout the film not just one or two, and it had that “it” moment, which was obviously the running through the battlefield shot in the third act (which was weirdly given away in the trailer…?). Overall 1917 is the most complete movie in the field this year in my opinion and I believe that because of this it will take home the Best Picture Oscar.

Okay that was the blog I hope you guys enjoyed my picks! Whether I am right or wrong I honestly don’t care because this year has been the best year of cinema in a long time for me and I truly do love essentially all the movies nominated tonight!!
